Never Attempt to Move a 3-Piece Slate Pool Table Assembled
A standard 8ft 3-piece slate table weighs approximately 800 to 850 pounds. The slate bed is made of three matched Brazilian or Italian slate slabs bolted to the wooden subframe. The micro-transitions between these slabs are welded with melted beeswax and scraped to a tolerance of 0.005".
When amateur movers or homeowners push, roll, or lift an assembled table with dollies, the table’s frame flexes under the weight. This immediately:
- Ruptures the beeswax/plaster seams, creating ball roll deflection.
- Shears the hardwood alignment dowels holding the slabs parallel.
- Twists the wooden cabinet joints, permanently destroying frame squareness.
Read our technical analysis on why moving a 3-piece slate table assembled causes catastrophic structural failure. Planning new floors? Use our two-phase flooring remodel package to protect both table and tile.
The South Cali Billiards Standard:
We systematically unbolt the rails, remove the cloth without cutting, label each slate slab, and hand-carry each slab individually in heavy-duty quilted blankets.
At your destination, we reassemble the frame, shim the slates to the subfloor, re-melt the beeswax joints, and verify 4-axis level with a Starrett 98 machinist level. Check your room spacing with our cue clearance chart before delivery.
Matched 1-inch slate slabs bolted to subframe before micro-seam sealing.
Chassis stripped down for safe in-home storage and 2-phase flooring remodels.
